The World Festival CAPOEIRA GERAIS was held the first time in 1995, under the title of international meeting. In its fifth edition the festival gained new forms and dimensions because of the yearly growing increase of public demand and capoeristas. This event has the purpose of showing the importance of capoeira in our society and put Belo Horizonte on the international circuit of tourism.

The group Capoeira Gerais is responsible for the world festival Capoeira Gerais, this group was founded in February fifth of 1993 in Belo Horizonte, by William Douglas Guimarães, commonly known as Mestre Mão Branca. He first started at the Association of Capoeira “Negrinhos de Sinhá”, which was founded in the 70´s decade by the great Mestre Gigante, legendary figure of Capoeira in Rio de Janeiro. Today Capoeira Gerais exists in more than 20 countries.

The fifth World Festival CAPOEIRA GERAIS will be held on the period of august forth to august tenth, in Belo Horizonte, when there will be promoted a series of debates, workshops, concerts, and cultural performances which will take place on “Fundação Casa do Conde de Santa Marina Funarte”. This event should attract a varied audience, which includes university teaches, capoeira masters from different states of Brazil such as: Mestre João Grande, Mestre Acordeon, Mestre Cafuné, Mestre Nenel, Mestre Boneco, Mestre Paulão da Suíça, Mestre Antônio Dias, Mestre Bocão, Mestre Raílson, Mestre Veneno among others. The main institutions of education from the state of Minas Gerais will also be invited.
